Magdala Region

Magdala Region and the Sea of Galilee // Región de Magdala frente al Mar de Galilea

Migdal (Magdala), 5km/3mi north of Tiberias, was the home of Mary Magdalene. According to Flavius Josephus, the people of Migdal fought against Herod I and against the Romans, and finally sought refuge in the innumerable caves in the Wadi el-Hammam, a canyon-like valley to the west of Migdal. Once an important town, in which the Crusaders built a church in the 12th century, it later fell into ruin. The present farming village was established in 1910.
